Lifestyle/Basketball shoe inspired by next generation space shuttle
A few years ago, I worked as an aerospace engineer on a next-generation space shuttle program.
I’ve always been fascinated by how ideas from one industry can inspire innovation in another. Recently, I challenged myself to apply aerospace engineering principles to athletic footwear.
While spacecraft and footwear serve very different purposes, both demand thoughtful engineering, purposeful design, and a relentless focus on performance.
The result is Space Rider, a concept performance shoe inspired by the vehicle I once helped develop.
Key design features include:
• A triangular support structure inspired by the shuttle’s foldable wing architecture, designed to improve lockdown and foot security.
• Structural bands across the upper inspired by the vehicle’s space frame, providing support while creating a distinctive visual identity.
• Stability-focused sole components engineered to help athletes move confidently through forward, lateral, and explosive movements.
Space Rider explores how principles developed for flight can be reimagined for human movement on Earth.

Inspiration & Technical Details

Colorways
Black and gold colors are inspired by internal colors of the space vehicle and gold typically used in satellites. White is inspired by the external structure of the shuttle and last but not least silver is inspired by aluminum, which is a popular material in aerospace industry.
01 Black/Gold — internal structure
02 White/Gold — bridge between internal and external (Gold is commonly used in satellites)
03 All White — pure spacecraft shell
04 Black/Silver — technical/metallic interpretation (Aluminum, silver color, is commonly used in aerospace)
05 White/Black — external shell + thermal/underside contrast
